Electronic copies of documents

Posted July 17, 2007 at 01:07pm in General

I recently received a letter from VA department of taxation that I owed them money for a previous year. It turns out the reason was because I filed the return for my Florida income while in Virginia and they assumed I made the money in VA. I guess I was supposed to notify them I really don’t know, but having electronic copies of everything made it much easier to clear up.

A few months ago I took all my bank statements and credit card statements and scanned them. It was about 300 pages so it took some time, but when I needed to find a document I just looked it up by type (bank, credit card, etc) and then by the company and I was able to find all the statements from when I was in Florida. I didn’t have to dig through any papers to find statements with my Florida address on them I could just use the wheel on the mouse to flip through images, if I even had to do that.

Moral of the story, scan everything and burn it to DVD.
