Mozy on Over, My quick review of Mozy Backup
Earlier this week I signed up for Mozy backup, a secure online backup service that offers a 2GB free account. Your computer interfaces with Mozy through a very clean application that as of right now is only available through Windows, but I believe that is going to change very soon. Within this interface you are given the ability to create “Backup Sets”, which are essentially a set of files that will be backed up on schedule you set. When a backup is performed it is stored by date, time, and backup set so you can restore each individual version. In addition to backup set versions your information is encrypted with a 448bit blowfish algorithm and transmitted using 128bit SSL, how much more secure can you ask for? In the status box you can view your backup history, which includes all connection attempts to the service, the files backed up, the speed transferred, and a lot of other useful information to have. There is even an interface in Windows Explorer that makes it easier to see what files you have on the server and directly restore them.
The only thing I have seen that I dislike is not being able to delete files. The whole point behind backups is to have another version to restore to, but there gets to be a point where you need to delete some of them. Other than that I have not seen too many features I would like included or anything else I am unhappy about.
I am extremely picky about software, but this software is smooooooth. It integrates very nicely with their service and I have had no hiccups on my machine whatsoever. Give it a try, I think you will be very happy.
