Browser trick for Shortcuts

Posted February 28, 2007 at 02:02pm in Computers

Many of us know about dragging the icon to the left of the URL to a folder to create a shortcut. This is my primary method because I keep so many bookmarks. What do you do what you can’t drag it? One example is Carbon Made, I’m not even sure what prevents it from being bookmarked this way, but it doesn’t.

Here is the trick, go to C:\Documents and Settings\YOURUSER\SentTo then open the start menu and navigate to Accessories. Right click and drag the Notepad shortcut over the folder for SendTo and release then select ‘Copy Here’. Make a copy of a bookmark, right click and select Send To -> Notepad. This will open the shortcut so you can edit it. Change the things you want to change and save it. You now have a shortcut to the page you wanted. You also have the ability to send absolutely anything to Notepad. I use this Notepad trick for a lot of things.

The thing that Made my day

Posted February 27, 2007 at 03:02am in General

I am talking with one of my very very best friends in the whole world, Drew. I have missed her a great deal, we have lost touch because of our lives and schedules, but we are back in touch and that will hopefully never change. She had a baby not too long ago, and his name is Maddox. When my free time increases I’m on a non-stop flight to see my favorite girl.

Adobe Activation Sucks

Posted February 27, 2007 at 01:02am in Computers

I have 3 machines that I use on a normal basis and trying to stick to a policy of reinstalling windows every 5 or 6 months I have to reactivate Photoshop twice a year on two machines. My activations have run out and I have to call in every time because CS1 does not have an option to transfer activation and they will not reset my activation counter. I guess if you have a machine that all you do is write HTML maybe a little PHP and make some graphics you wouldn’t need to format as often, but if you actually use your machine things get screwed up quick. For some reason this install has been particularly bad so I just recreated my unattended install and I think it is a winner. According to the registry it has been about 2.5 months since my last install. That was when I moved my primary work to my desktop and I still do not know why the install went downhill so fast, but it will hopefully be different this time around.

Jason Michael Carroll Lyrics - Alyssa Lies

Posted February 27, 2007 at 12:02am in Lyrics
My little girl met a new friend,
just the other day,
on the playground at school
between the tires and the swings

But she came home with tear-filled eyes,
and she said to me "Daddy, Alyssa lies"

Well I just brushed it off at first,
'cause I didn't know how much my little girl had been hurt
o'er the things she had seen.
I wasn't ready when I said "You can tell me"

and she said...

"Alyssa lies to the classroom,
Alyssa lies everyday at school,
Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise"

My little girl laid her head down that night to go to sleep.
As I stepped out the room, I heard her say a prayer so soft and sweet
"God bless my mom and my Dad
and my new friend, Alyssa
I know she needs you bad

Because Alyssa lies to the classroom,
Alyssa lies everyday at school,
Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise"

(bridge)

I had the worst night of sleep in years
as I tried to think of a way to calm her fears
I knew exactly what it was I had to do
but when we got to school on Monday I heard the news

My little girl asked me why everybody looked so sad.
The lump in my throat grew bigger
with every question that she asked.
Until I felt the tears run down my face
and I told her that Alyssa wouldn't be at school today

'Cause she doesn't lie in the classroom
she doesn't lie anymore at school
Alyssa lies with Jesus
because there's nothin' anyone would do.

Tears filled my eyes when my little girl asked me why
Alyssa lies.
Oh Daddy, Oh Daddy tell me why
Alyssa lies

I love pixel buttons

Posted February 26, 2007 at 04:02am in Design

There are now a lot more people that wish they could hack so they could rip apart my website for saying it, but I love em. I wish I could have a shit load of them on my website, but that would be just awful. I guess what I love is how informative they are for such a tiny object, the fonts are clear and the colors and tiny designs can tell you a lot. In a short block I could tell you a lot about my website with just a couple buttons, but using just the text would not give you the same information. I might just make a page with all the pixel buttons that apply and leave it at that.

Very Disappointed

Posted February 25, 2007 at 06:02pm in Design

I had submitted my portfolio site, Canvas the Web to a number of CSS sites and none of them added it. I know my design is not the best in the world, but I have been doing this for a while and I know it is a good design. The code is also 100% valid, both XHTML and CSS so it is just sad and annoying it was not listed. Maybe that will change. I am now going to work on a design for CSS Zen Garden.

The Latest

Music: The All-American Rejects, not a new band, but I had only listened to Swing, Swing and Move Along. I have been playing two of their albums for the past 2 days, The All-American Rejects and Move Along. Both albums are great and I highly recommend them to anyone who has liked any of their stuff.

Work: I have a phone interview with a company in Charlottesville about helping on a Joomla project. I’m excited about that, Joomla is good stuff and I wanted to get deeper into the code of the CMS, this way I get paid too. I won’t discuss details of the project, what little I know, but it looks promising.

Computer: I have to reformat my Desktop and Laptop this week, my laptop has been a test bed for the past couple weeks and its getting messy and my desktop is around 6 months since the last time which is longer than I like to go so it is a big mess as well. Firefox is pissing me off big time, it has been crashing on me a lot lately, but I cannot do without it. I am running v2.0.0.2 and it is crashing less, but it just annoying as shit when it does crash.

I have been trying to decide my course of action regarding my machines. I am going to be moving to Core Duo sometime in the future, possibly AMD if they come out with something insane before I buy. I have a lot of choices to make because I would like to move to Linux more, but I need Windows, and I do not want to have as many machines as I need laying around. I will need my Laptop, Desktop, Linux Desktop, and a Dev Server. I would really like it if there was a way to have multiple operating systems running at the same time in the root of the hardware like the ESX server by VMWare, if I understand it correctly. Then you could have the controller change the video between the two. Maybe it is already possible I really don’t know (hint hint, this is where you readers come in). I need multiple systems running at the same time, but do not want the hassle of all the hardware. I have been looking into a 12U rackmount enclosure because there is a 3U case I absolutely love and would be perfect and I could go with a 1U for the development box and a 2U for the Linux box. That leaves me with 6 more U’s to play with, and I plan on getting a 2U or 3U drawer for the enclosure. I could possible even go with 2 x 2U drawers and put my laptop in one.

Another thought is to use the Core Duo as a server, put 4gb of RAM in it and use Thin Clients. There is a thin client I found a while back that mounts in the wall like a electrical outlet, it has a plug for your VGA, Mouse, USB, Keyboard, Network, and Sound, very very cool. In California we used thin clients in the office and they weren’t bad.

Pissed: I just found out that the email I setup for the new site using GoDaddy’s email account is not working. I could not send the email to Godaddy and when I called and told them I could not forward it they told me to forward it. I cannot setup DNS because I do not have access to the primary on the servers my hosting is on. The thing that makes me more mad is that this means I had to ask Josh to do it for me and I asked about 3 times with no action taken. While I appreciate that he gives me free hosting, after a while of having my messages not being read it really begins to show a lack of interest in speaking with me. There have been a large number of messages that he has not read and everyday he becomes more like Matt did in the end. I now have to go change shit to get something to work.

It looks like this is finally in motion or at least moving faster than it had been.

Help me select a monitor

Posted February 24, 2007 at 11:02pm in Computers

I am looking into getting another monitor….. or two sometime in the future. I currently have a 1907 by Dell that I enjoy very much and I plan on keeping it for coding because the display rotates giving me a nice long screen to code on. At the same time I think about coding on a wide wide screen and since I don’t trim my text at a certain column the width could come in handy. I have two monitors in mind,

Dell E207WFP 20-inch Widescreen and the Dell 22 Widescreen Flat Panel. The height of the 22 is the same as my 19 inch for the most part and that would be nice, but it is $80 more than the 20 inch, which takes about an inch off my viewable height. I would really like to get the 30″, but I don’t like having to sell my soul to afford a monitor. It would be really nice to get two 22″ Dells and have a 3 independent arm monitor stand put the 22s on each side of the 19 spin the 22s and put them next to each other.

If someone has seen the monitors side by side in person I would appreciate some input.
