Analyzing server logs quickly

Posted January 30, 2007 at 07:01pm in Computers

A number of years ago when going through some server logs I came up with a quick method of seeing the information, a spreadsheet. It is very simple.

1. Download your log
2. Replace all spaces with tabs (most logs do not put spaces in critical data)
3. Copy the text and paste it into Excel or OpenOffice calc.

Each column with represent certain data and you can now remove certain columns or shrink them to make it easier to read. With IIS files you will want to use a sorting function to combine all of the commented lines and then remove them. This will make things a little easier.

Both applications have a row limit of 65,536 rows. So I do not recommend this if you have huge logs to look at.
